Howl2GO’s Picks for Top Summer Songs

Summertime is the best time of the yaer. And when the sun comes out, the songs only get hotter! Check out Howl2GO’s picks for our all-time top songs of the summer.

“The Boys of Summer”—Don Henley (1984)

The perfect place to start. This track by the Eagles’ drummer and songwriter is a song that forever will be revered as a classic, not just a ballad of the summer. The song speaks to realizing the inevitability of growing up—right at the moment that any summer starts to feel eternal. “I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac” is a line that alone is packed-tight with nostalgia, false-promises, revision, acceptance, and so, so much more. Find your own meaning here:

“Crazy in Love”—Beyonce ft. Jay-Z (2003)

There is no better block party anthem than “Crazy in Love”. Bar none. It’s seriously impossible not to start moving at the sound of the trumpet’s first blare (plus Hov’s ad-libbing underneath). The then-fresh couple of Jay-Z and Beyonce created the summer song that will simply never fade out.

“Rockaway Beach”—Ramones (1977)

The gritty and twangy strums of Johnny Ramone’s guitar sounds exactly like New York teenagers in the 70’s racing each other down the streets of Queens to find the best spot in the sand. Every mile approaching the ocean eventually begins to feel beachier the further south they go—like a path to an out-of-place oasis in the concrete desert. Check out the legendary summer anthem here:

“Summer of ‘69”—Bryan Adams (1985)

“Summer of ‘69” is a song about the “Boys of Summer” in the process of growing—starting when things were a little more innocent. It’s nostalgia-soaked just the same as Henley’s track but speaks more to capturing the love-soaked nights and blaring sun as it begins to fade into memory. Bryan Adams has left more than a wink in interviews when discussing the song’s obvious innuendo, but you can make your own opinion here:

“Summer Nights”—Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, Grease ensemble (1978)

The teenage equivalent to Don Henley and Bryan Adams’ songs is actually its precursor. “Summer Nights” takes a look at the so-strange ways that summer thrills can bring lovers from opposite worlds together, and opens the book on where it can go from there rxcare.net. Catch the iconic scene here:

“Heat Wave”—Martha and the Vandellas (1963)

The oldest summer song on our list is a Motown classic that turns the ‘summer love’ metaphor on its head. Rather than summer being the force that brings lovers together, “Heat Wave” levels about the dangerous and uncertain feelings that love can bring upon—and what happens at the eventual boiling point.

“High Horse”—Kacey Musgraves (2018)

One of the biggest hits of Summer 2018 has also been one of the most interesting tracks of 2018 so far. Kacey Musgraves has spent the past several years executing a domination of the pop-country scene, but “High Horse” is where it all comes to a head. It’s disco-meets-country with traditional Japanese-pop overtones—and it somehow all works from the first listen.
